Arrived back in the mountains with a load to sell at Oddfellows after a “letting go of the stuff” session at my own home. This settee had special meaning but it didn’t serve a function anymore for us. But, boy oh boy, letting go of the stuff seems really hard. Part of January purging involves “thinning out” and looking at stuff through a new lens, the lens that sees my kids not realistically wanting all this stuff. Or wanting to deal with… Read More
This is my ideal store where reuse and sustainability meet good design. The store opened its DC location in April and it’s packed with a mix of beautiful wood and upholstered furniture and fun accessories. I saw a blurb in Elle Decor and Trohv (pronounced “trove”) far exceeded my expectations…
A Mr. F&F getaway, the two of us alone, has not happened for ages. His company Christmas party is always in January and we’ve typically brought the kids and done a little DC sightseeing. Middle child has to work at her part time job and little man has a bat mitzvah to attend, so lovely aunt and uncle to the rescue! A good excuse for us to escape alone – did I mention we’ll be alone? I can’t wait for… Read More
Antiques update for my booths. Moved some stuff from Raleigh to Asheville…and generally did an overhaul to my booth in Asheville. Trying to lighten and brighten and modernize in preparation for the winter doldrums….
This was the year of Moneyball, Jingle Balls, soon-to-be New Year’s Eve ball drops…or in the case of Alec Baldwin, very “Schweddy Balls” on a recent flight….I’d like to call this the year of Christmas Balls. I got balls. Bowls of balls, balls on shells, balls on trays, birds and balls (borrowed from BHG? Real Simple?), balls in hand…let the pictures speaketh for themselves. Have a ball and Merry Christmas “Eve” y’all….
I don’t like refinishing work, so I avoid it at all costs. PERIOD. Thankfully there are many products on the market that allow you to “cheat” away scratches and other imperfections. Goo Gone (see below) is usually a winner for gooey, gluey kind of stuff, however, this time it didn’t work. A cardboard box had attached itself “real good” (as we say in the south) to the side table and left a pretty rectangular outline. It finally took scalding, hot water… Read More
Christmas at Form & Function West…and some Holiday Decor Part 2 at Oddfellows in Asheville, NC.
Christmas and holiday decor at Hunt & Gather, Form & Function style…lots of balls-in-a-bowl…my favorite way to display vintage ornaments… Some vintage toys, puzzles, cradle and primitive highchair mixed in… Candy land in vintage pitcher and bowl set… And other vignettes…
Here are some of the lovelies found at most recent auction and a couple other things found elsewhere. F&F very crowded so having a sale at Hunt and Gather this weekend, running through Halloween evening. Busts are hot rights now and I’ll be damned if I can score them at auction (there were probably ten lots of busts at this auction) but I did manage to get a couple small ones… Feel lucky to have scored this table cause… Read More
Some miscellaneous redoprojects I’ve been working on. Brushed up on my refinishing skills for the top of this cool sideboard. It was never my intention to buy ” redo projects” but I committed the cardinal sin of auctions. I didn’t do a proper pre-inspection of this sideboard before the auction began. Soooo I ended up with a piece that had chinks in the veneer and required some gluing, not to mention the resurfacing of the top. I did the necessary repairs… Read More
F & F added some new industrial decor pieces at Hunt & Gather this week. Went to Atlanta to buy and sell at Scott Antique Market this past weekend and brought back some industrial goodies…is Raleigh ready for repurposing industrial decor into chic decor? We’ll see. The market was great, and met a lot of interesting folks. Here’s a preview of F&F’s latest finds. …and now I’m at the beach on my next adventure, serving as a judge for the… Read More
I’ve heard about Scott’s Antique Market forever but had never made it down there…in fact, having lived in the south for 24 years I’ve never actually been to Hotlanta for any reason. With more than 3000 dealers at two exposition centers (both inside and outside), Scott’s is overwhelming for the newbie. Got a good overview today and saw some dealers I know from Asheville area and met MANY new ones…particularly intrigued by a couple guys who reuse old materials to make new furniture… Read More
Here’s what’s going on at F&F retail lately…our antique mall has a HUGE clearance sale going on this weekend (thru 5 pm Sunday, August 28th). A few samples of what antique treasures F&F has to offer. Enjoy!
I’m not really good about posting my recent design work, but today I went to do some follow-up work at a wonderful clients’ home and actually brought my camera. The painting above was the inspiration for the design work that followed. This picture belonged to the wifes’ parents and it’s the home they lived in in New Zealand. I loved the painting itself, how it was framed, and especially the meaning for the family. The clients had the couches and… Read More
I’ve been in a family funk with one child going through some pretty serious stuff, and though I’ve still had moments here and there to blog, it’s amazing how lack of sleep and crisis sap your creative energy. During this time I also started initial contact with six new clients and continued to “fluff” my retail booth. Some restorative time in the mountains this past weekend got the creative juices flowing again (and proved very therapeutic for my middle child)…. Read More
Spring decor ideas at Form & Function. There are so many spring decor ideas in stock right now, but I thought I’d take you on a tour of my current favorites. This hot pink table will “heat” up your covered porch or mudroom. Lost ladies need a home. Lots of vases and flower frogs in stock. Spring decor ideas diet should include lots of iron. Get a “head” start on all your gardening. Let’s “sea” about some coral. And finally, take a… Read More
Furniture arrived this morning and now the retail booth is complete. Nah, not really, because I will always be moving things around. Here’s the overall view. TIP ONE: Pillows are an easy, inexpensive way to update your decor without blowing the budget. I have even reused pillow inserts and put new fabric covers on top as another cost savings. TIP TWO: Amass things in bowls…things that you wouldn’t normally think to amass. Corks…why not? They’re free and beautiful with an… Read More
